For decades, it has been known that smoking is a silent killer! Although, cigarette smoking is not traditionally considered as drug addiction, but you must know that cigarettes wrapped in nicotine are not only addictive but can also pose life threatening consequences on your health. But it is somewhat surprising that smoking cigarettes do not really affect serum testosterone levels! There are numerous research studies which have supported this astonishing statement.

What Does Research Say About Smoking Impact On Testosterone Levels?

According to a new comparative research study that was designed to compare testosterone levels in both smokers and non-smokers, results indicated that both groups had almost same T levels on an average. Investigators also hypothesized that testosterone levels probably remains unaffected by cigarette smoking (1,2)

A similar research study was carried out between heavy chain smokers and non-smokers. It was found that the serum levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and androgen levels were almost the same in both groups (1)

Another research study that yielded even surprising results was conducted on 71 men who decided to quit. After a few months of withdrawal, slight increase in testosterone levels was observed. However, after one year, their testosterone levels dropped back to the same level as it was when they used to smoke. In fact, some men also experienced a significant dip in their testosterone levels.

How Can Smoking Affect The Hormonal Metabolism?

Historically, it has been observed that men with elevated T levels have greater odds of getting involved in jeopardizing situations such as gambling, drinking and smoking. This brought researchers to a hypothetical assumption that smokers have high levels of testosterone, which is responsible for their daring activities. In simple words, men with high testosterone levels are more likely to end up as smokers as compared to those with low T levels.

Another research study suggested that cigarettes metabolizes testosterone very quickly. This also means that smoking makes testosterone metabolism from the liver more efficient. However, it is strange to know that this metabolizing effect does not alter the total testosterone levels in the serum of smokers!

With several studies supporting the harm-free effects of cigarettes on the testosterone levels, one study provided a bit baffling results. As per this study there is no significant difference in the testosterone levels of smokers and non-smokers. But, smoking does reduce zinc levels which is one of the principle mineral required to produce testosterone. This suggests that men with poor diet and smoking habit can have zinc deficiency which may lead to low T levels.

Does That Mean Smoking Is Not Bad For Your Health?

Though there is massive research that proves smoking doesn't harm testosterone levels but, it does affect "erections" by accelerating vascular damage due to atherosclerosis. Moreover, cigarettes have a harmful impact on the wellness of your vital organs including lungs and heart. Thus, either directly or indirectly smoking does affect sexual and overall general health. According to another study reported in the Human Reproduction (3) journal, investigators concluded that smoker males have lower ejaculate volume and seminal fluid regardless of high serum testosterone levels. Likewise, smokers are also more likely to face fertility issues.

Therefore, continuation of smoking with a thought that it won't harm your testosterone levels, is not a sensible choice. Because if your overall health is not satisfactory, you won't be able to cherish your raging T levels for a longer period of time. Speak to a doctor if you need help quitting smoking.

Carrying over from the '90s, we all still rocked the sun and moon doona cover in the 2000s until it was so tattered that your mum turned it into a rag for cleaning. Honestly, I just know the astrology girlies would go mad to get their hands on this set today.

Blame it on the Aussie ~beach babe~ stereotype we were all trying to live up to or the impact thatH20: Just Add Water had on us as kids, but the dolphin craze of the 2000s was a real moment.

A special shoutout goes out to that glittery dolphin lamp on the spiral stand that somehow magically found its way into all our homes without explanation.

4. That 3D Aquarium Lamp

Our obsession with the ocean wasn't limited to dolphins either. For reasons unknown, every little girl went through a stage thinking they were going to be a marine biologists when they grew up — and what goes perfectly with a career focused on aquatic life?

In theory, they were great — the concept was that you could "sleep under the stars" while in the comfort and safety of your own bedroom. In reality, these stars didn't do shit. They barely lit up at night and looked horrendous during the day.

Having a set of these bad boys hanging in your doorway never failed to make you feel like you were the main character of a teen movie every time you entered your bedroom.

Sure, it would always get tangled up in itself and make way too much noise when you were trying to sneak around in silence. But anything for the aesthetic, right?

A bed canopy was honestly one of the few bedroom decor items that could make you feel like a princess for cheap.

At first, we started with mosquito net-style canopies made of scratchy neon material before we graduated to the more flowy and feminine draping that IT girls like Summer fromThe OCpopularised. And honestly, thanks to cottagecore, I can see the more mature version of this trend making a real comeback.

9. Dream Catchers In Every Colour

Just how owls had a chokehold on 2010s fashion, the dreamcatcher had the girlies STUCK in the '00s.

Not only were dreamcatchers printed on t-shirts for years, but you'd be hard-pressed to find a girl without at least three of them hanging on the edge of her bed frame ready to catch all bad vibes. And don't get me started on the craze of trying to make them ourselves…

10. Blow-Up Furniture That Took Way Too Long To Inflate

There was just something about spending an hour blowing up a plastic chair by yourself that was so satisfying. Of course, once it was inflated you rarely ever sat on it because of how sticky the chair became in summer when temperatures peaked over 25°C.

But it looked cool, and that's all that mattered.

11. A Box Full Of Lip Smackers

Before our mums let us officially use lipstick, we were all allowed to have one item of "makeup" — and that was the humble Lip Smacker lip balm.

Now, was Lip Smackers technically makeup? Definitely not. But was it fun to collect every flavour and colour we could get our grubby little hands on just so that we could flex our massive "makeup collection" to our friends? You betcha.

The chokehold these mesh slippers had on society in the 2000s was truly unmatched. They were cheap, they were cute, and they came in every colour imaginable, which made them perfect for outfit coordination.

Remember the era where going to the Post Office was something we begged our parents to do so we could pick up the latest Sabrina's Secrets mag?! I do. I crave that feeling of pure joy and excitement every day.

Thankfully, it all got a little easier when Limewire came around and we all had that one uncle who just randomly knew how to burn CDs for us. In the end, we would just end up with a disc book full of original CDS and random compilations with the word "MegaMix 7" written in Sharpie on the front of it — and I wouldn't have it any other way.

According to recent findings, the average person changes their sheets every 24 days or so — or, roughly, every three weeks. Maybe that seems acceptable to you, and, clearly, you wouldn't be alone. But that doesn't change the fact that unwashed bed sheets are a paradise for microscopic dust mites and other allergens. So, how frequently should you wash your bedding? We're taking a look at some tips and tricks — and delving into why stretching a set of sheets for that 24-day duration isn't a very healthy idea.

Here's the thing: If you're only washing your bed sheets once a month, you're not doing it enough. Ideally, you should be washing them every week. (Or, at a minimum, every other week.) If you're sick or taking care of someone who's not feeling well, washing the bed sheets daily is an important step when it comes to getting better. Don't forget to wash the sheets in warm water and dry on a high setting to kill any potential bacteria.

And don't forget about your pillow. Yes, the actual pillow, not just the case. You may not want to think about it, but pillows can host mold, yeast, and bacteria, which, in turn, can cause conditions like asthma. Haven't washed your pillow in years? Maybe this is the time to invest in a new one.

What Lives in Your Sheets?

By now, you've probably checked your sheets to see if anything's there. If you don't see anything, you shouldn't feel relief. Known as dust mites, these pests are invisible to the naked eye, but they're around. The best way to keep them under control? Wash your sheets regularly in hot water. • If hand-washing, your bed sheets should be washed in hot, soapy water.
• Make sure you don't wash them with clothes as this may cause damage or lead to pilling.
• If you spot a stain, try to take care of it before the washing process begins.
• Need to brighten up white sheets? Add a quarter of a cup of lemon juice before washing with warm water.
• When using a dryer, try a medium or low setting since high heat might damage the fibers.

Blankets:

• Depending on your blanket fabric, you may need to pay attention to the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Generally, your wool blankets should only be washed in cold water and put on a low spin setting once in the dryer.
• Never wash your electric blankets or weighted blankets in a machine — for obvious reasons.
• Don't have time for a proper wash? Try vacuuming your blankets.
• To avoid further damage, mend any rips and tears before washing your blanket.

Comforters & Bedspreads:

• Comforter washing is a bit complicated. You should always test the comforter for colorfastness first by dipping a corner into a bit of the detergent. If the color bleeds, have it dry-cleaned instead.
• Your comforters or bedspreads may require special care that your regular washing machine isn't able to provide as well. Consider cleaning them in a commercial washer and dryer instead.
• If you've decided to wash your comforter at home, you should do so in cold water and on low heat. If possible, let the washed bedspread air dry on a clothesline.

Quilts:

• Quilts are just as delicate as comforters and should be washed in the same way.
• It's always best to hand wash quilts that are old and fragile.
• Never wash silk or velvet quilts.

Pillowcases:

• Pillowcases should be machine-washed in cold water and dried on a cool setting.
• Remember to fluff your pillows daily to get rid of dust and dead skin cells.
• You should air out your pillows frequently by hanging them on a clothesline — or, if you don't have a clothesline, leave them near an open window.

Ksenia Kagner and Nicko Elliott, the founders and architects behind Brooklyn-based firm Civilian Projects, have a special talent for designing kitchen islands. "We love the idea of it reading as a piece of furniture," says Elliott. One they made for a townhouse in Fort Greene back in 2020 features an oil-finished walnut base with rounded corners and a bar on the counter-stool side that acts as a footrest. Then there's the island they dreamed up for their own brownstone in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Rather than plop down a boxy stone structure in the middle of their newly opened, 350-square-foot kitchen, the couple incorporated plywood maple niches where they can display cookbooks, as well as decorative items they sell through their just-launched online shop, Civilian Objects. They pulled inspiration from some of their favorite restaurants in Milan and painted striped and checkered patterns on the open shelves beneath the Arabescato marble worktop in a punchy oxblood hue. "I want to be free to try things and see how they look, see how they work, and then build upon them for future clients," says Kagner.

You'd never know today that their bright, modern kitchen used to be a bedroom. (The kitchen was originally located downstairs on the garden level, but because all the natural light was on the parlor level, they decided to bring the cooking space up a notch—er, story.) After knocking down a wall, they carved out a wide-open space to build their dream kitchen. Ultimately, with two little kids at home, "we spend most of our days here," says Kagner. "It was a no-brainer."

Aside from wading through tricky city permits, the pair didn't face too many logistical challenges moving the kitchen up a level. "It was pretty straightforward," says Elliott. The only issue that came up early in the reno was one that stemmed from human error. The pair decided to ditch the old gas range for a wall-mounted oven, so they closed up the walls. But when their new appliance arrived, they realized they hadn't put in the right power source to support it, bringing them back to the original arrangement. "To think even someone as experienced as us could make a mistake like that is a little embarrassing," says Elliott, laughing.

Go Uniform

The same grade-A maple plywood they used within the island makes a grand appearance on the adjacent wall. The blond-toned wood disguises not only the Bosch refrigerator but also the slide-out pantry (peep the tiny cupboard door by the stairs). "We wanted everything to read like a wall of paneling," explains Elliott. All of the cabinet doors have small ridges so they can easily be opened, with the exception of the highest doors, which open with a light push. The surfaces were slightly sanded before a polyurethane coating was applied with a cloth. The designers toyed with roller, spray, and sponge applications first, but liked this solution best, as it gave the doors a matte finish similar to Charlotte Perriand's furniture from the 1950s and '60s.

Make It a Place of Work and Play

For the young parents, working from home usually translates to working from the kitchen. The issue is, they're often carrying around big blueprints and drawings that they don't want to lay down on a crumb-ridden countertop. Plus "being able to have your computer off to the side in its own place, separate from life, was very important for us," says Elliott. So they incorporated a built-in desk nook on the other side of the threshold that leads to the living room, using the same maple plywood to achieve a cohesive appearance. "It looks like a writing table from the 1700s that you just open the lid to—it's tidy and clean," says Kagner. The corner will one day serve as a homework nook for their kids. "We tried to look into the future as much as possible," she adds.

Budget More Time for Custom Colors

The section of lower cabinets by the new range are IKEA frames with custom door fronts. Even the deep green-blue hue is bespoke: Elliott and Kagner sourced pigment from a local artist after not being able to find a paint color at the hardware store that lived up to their expectations. The process involved mixing colored pigments with a white substrate and then applying layer after layer to the grain (around seven total). "It was definitely a labor of love," says Elliott. "It's like building up a Renaissance painting."

Save on Architectural Lighting

One piece of advice the architects always share with other renovators is to not overspend on recessed or track lighting. The couple are fans of inexpensive porcelain sockets with silver-dipped bulbs (you can see them on the white-painted brick wall). This way they can save their money for statement lighting over the island. "That should be the investment," says Elliott. "It's a nice way to change the mood."

Make the Hood Pop

Unsatisfied with the vent hoods they were seeing on the market, Kagner and Elliott decided to create their own. "It's a white wall with no shelving—it really had to be something that either completely blended in or completely stood out on its own," says Kagner. Once again inspired by Milanese design, they landed on an arch silhouette and swathed it in a poppy red laminate coating. While they usually lead with function first, form later, flipping the script paid off. "It's so overscaled, but it feels incredibly good in the space," adds Elliott. "It took us a long time to learn how to listen to our intuition."

Go Bold with Wallpaper

Wallpaper may seem like a dated idea, but many of today's modern prints and designs look nothing like those blocky, geometric designs from days gone by. Bold prints and striking patterns that might look overwhelming in a larger space can really shine in a small bathroom. Choose an accent wall and decorate it with bright colors or a punchy pattern or go dramatic and wallpaper the entire bathroom in a textured print.

Keep Counter Lines Clean

If you have an ample budget, changing your bathroom counter can really change the entire feel of the bathroom. Choose a design that adds crisp, clean lines to the space. Decorative finishes and scalloped edges may seem fancy and tempting, but they can distract from the rest of the room and diminish your counter space. Additionally, patterned designs on the walls call for "non-busy" counters and accessories to avoid a cluttered feel.

If your shower doesn't have shelves, then look for a hanging shower caddy to drape over the shower head to hold your supplies. If you hang a shelf near your sink, pick up some cute containers to place on it to hold your toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush and other essentials.
